Throughout Africa, the figures are alarming: - Only 65% of births are attended by a skilled professional healthcare worker. - One in 13 children do not survive to their fifth birthday. - Over 80% of maternal deaths worldwide occur in sub-Saharan Africa.
However, these tragedies can be avoided through the training of midwives and healthcare professionals. 1 trained midwife = 500 mothers and babies cared for safely That is why Amref Health Africa places the strengthening of community workers and healthcare personnel at the heart of its work, while supporting local expertise and mobilising digital health innovations.
In Africa, only 65% of births are attended by qualified health personnel. This is the lowest rate in the world. In sub-Saharan Africa, one child in 13 does not survive to their fifth birthday. More than 80% of maternal deaths worldwide occur in sub-Saharan Africa (source UN, 2017).
Many deaths could be avoided by training healthcare staff, particularly midwives.
Amref Health Africa places the strengthening of community workers and healthcare staff at the heart of its action, while mobilising digital health innovations. This involves continuous on-site training using digital tools (e-learning and mobile learning). It also means adopting telemedicine technologies (remote specialist diagnosis) and computerised patient records and monitoring.

Amref Health Africa (France) is working to improve the health of young people in Africa, particularly women and adolescent girls.
150 champions trained in the prevention of female genital mutilation in Senegal. 36,263 students in South Africa benefited from a medical visit. 11,328 children in Senegal and Guinea treated in medical camps specialising in consultations and surgery.
- 1. Educating youth on health issues with the school programme at LIMPOPO (South Africa)
Launched in 2018 in Limpopo province, School Health bridges the gap between health services, children and their families by informing them about health, hygiene and nutrition practices
2. Fighting FGC with the Devenir programme in Sédhiou (Senegal)> The Devenir project, signed in September 2020 with the French Development Agency, is being deployed in the Sédhiou region of Senegal to help reduce female genital mutilation.
3. Uniting for Children with the Capital Santé programme (Senegal and Guinea) The Health Capital project aims to reduce morbidity and mortality in children by providing them with optimal health capital through the engagement and interrelation of 3 environments: school, family and health services.

In 2025, we still find it unacceptable that women can die giving birth and that children can die when we can prevent it. Since 2014, SPARTOO has been committed to supporting Amref. Our donations have contributed to the training of thousands of healthcare professionals and workers every year. These actions save lives and improve the quality of care in Africa, including for communities that are furthest from healthcare services.
